Google has been making quiet deals with publishers to utilize innovative AI tools for publishing stories, as reported by Adweek. These deals, reportedly valued at tens of thousands of dollars annually, are part of the Google News Initiative (GNI), a program that supports media literacy projects, fact-checking tools, and other newsroom resources. However, the use of generative AI publishing tools would mark a new and potentially controversial direction for the company.
Adweek states that the program is currently focused on a select group of smaller publishers. “The beta tools enable under-resourced publishers to efficiently create aggregated content by summarizing and publishing recently published reports from other organizations, such as government agencies and neighboring news outlets,” Adweek explains.
The exact compensation for publishers under this arrangement is not yet clear, but Adweek suggests that it’s a significant amount.
