In Baldur’s Gate 3, or really any CRPG for that matter, hitting the max level cap is one of the most important goals in a playthrough. However, unlike other games that put an emphasis on leveling, in BG3, it can feel a lot less important, as characters can actually play through a significant portion of Act 1 without leveling. That said, leveling up increases a character’s stats and provides access to new spells and subclass features that players can use to completely enhance their character and companions.
While it is true that the race, class, and subclass selections have a more significant impact on the campaign, leveling is also critical and will become even more important upon Baldur’s Gate 3’s official release, as players will gain access to higher-level areas in the game. As the title gains momentum while in Early Access on Steam, it’s natural to wonder what the max level cap will be once the rest of the game is released.
Based on the Dungeons & Dragons table-top roleplaying game, leveling in Baldur’s Gate 3 is an important mechanic that increases player and companion stats and provides access to new skills. To level in Baldur’s Gate 3, players must gain XP by defeating enemies, engaging in dialogue with NPCs, and completing quests throughout the Forgotten Realms. Once players have gained enough experience, a cross icon will appear on the character portrait, which they can click to ascend to the next level. XP progress can be checked by looking under the Character Sheet for said character.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, players gain access to more abilities and spells as they level, with one of the first skill-based decisions coming at level 4, where they are given a choice between enhancing an existing skill or learning an entirely new ability. While the decision is ultimately up to the person playing, picking multiple abilities that synergize with one another could make their character exponentially stronger and plays an important role in the player’s build as they climb levels.
Unlike other games, the focus in Baldur’s Gate 3 is more on the character build and skills over leveling quickly. Those looking to level up fast in BG3 may be disappointed, as fairly early, they will start to level slower. While there’s been no announcement for additional levels in subsequent Baldur’s Gate 3 expansions or DLC content, many D&D players agree that level 20 is the highest level a player can attain, which may be a clue to future content. The full PC release of the game is scheduled for August 3, 2023, with the PlayStation 5 version releasing on September 6, 2023.
