The Essential Side Quest in Zelda: TOTK to Ensure Link’s Survival

Among the many side quests available in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, there is one crucial to Link’s long-term survival in Hyrule in the wake of the Upheaval. Link is dramatically weakened after the introductory sequence below Hyrule Castle, and the initial encounter with Ganondorf there. As a result, the hero must regain his strength and collect equipment once more, just as he did in Breath of the Wild.

There is an incredible amount of things to do in Tears of the Kingdom aside from the main storyline. The game contains 139 official side quests and 60 so-called side adventures, which are typically longer than the average side quest and have more significance in terms of NPC interactions and rewards. For example, “A Call from the Depths” rewards Link with his choice of one a Heart Container or Stamina Vessel, while pursuing “Messages from an Ancient Era” will reveal more details about major characters from the past. However, completing one side adventure in particular is actually crucial to Link’s continued good health.

Near Woodland Stable in the Eldin Canyon region of Hyrule, the Great Fairy Tera has retreated from the Gloom-stricken world. “Serenade to a Great Fairy” is a side adventure that remedies this, encouraging Tera to emerge from her Fairy Fountain through the power of music. This side adventure not only grants players access to Tera, but also opens the way to unlocking her sisters as well. This is hugely important, as the Great Fairies can upgrade upgrade Link’s armor in TOTK, just as they did in BOTW. Even the first upgrade tier alone, which is unlocked alongside Tera, provides much-needed defense as Link’s enemies begin to grow in power.

In order to complete “Serenade to a Great Fairy,” Link first needs to begin “Potential Princess Sightings!,” an extensive side adventure in its own right that is started by agreeing to help the Lucky Clover Gazette investigate rumors about Princess Zelda. The Gazette, run by journalist Traysi (formerly the writer of the Rumor Mill in BOTW), has made its headquarters in what was previously the Rito Stable, found just outside of Rito Village. Traysi tasks Link with investigating rumors regarding Zelda at various Stables around Hyrule with Rito reporter Penn, which in turn brings the pair to Woodland Stable.
