Armored Core 6: Fires of Rubicon is challenging from the start, especially with its first boss, the AH12-HC Helicopter. This massive flying vehicle is armed with a wide array of guns and missiles, constantly bombarding the player. It can dish out significant damage while remaining unaffected. However, there is a secret to defeating it, even though it doesn’t make the battle easy.
FromSoftware, the developer of Armored Core 6, is renowned for incorporating tough bosses into its games. Dark Souls, Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and Sekiro are all famous for their difficult boss encounters, but most of those games had relatively simple first bosses. Armored Core 6 breaks this pattern by presenting a tough and seemingly insurmountable challenge right from the beginning, which can be frustrating for players who are unaware of the solution. However, the AH12-HC can be overcome with a specific approach.
The most effective way to defeat the AH12-HC Helicopter in Armored Core 6 is to primarily use melee weapons for attack. This may be confusing since the game has previously emphasized the use of ranged weapons. However, for the first time in the game, close-quarters combat is required against the AH12-HC, specifically with the Pulse Blade. Long-range options still have some viability – the assault rifle can cause stagger damage, and the missile launcher can help maintain momentum. However, the Pulse Blade is the optimal weapon for defeating Armored Core 6’s first boss.
In addition to challenging bosses, FromSoftware is notorious for not providing all the answers. Instead, their games offer the necessary tools for victory and leave the rest for players to discover. In Armored Core 6, the AH12-HC serves as an encouragement to try new strategies. Initially, players are accustomed to using melee weapons but are forced to experiment. Eventually, trying out the Pulse Blade reveals its effectiveness, making the fight manageable, though still difficult. The same strategy can be applied throughout the game – encountering a tough boss, testing the usual approach, failing, respecing, and trying again.
