Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has labeled Israel’s actions in Gaza as a significant threat on both regional and global scales. He emphasized the importance of recognizing a Palestinian state, stating that it aligns with Europe’s geopolitical interests.
Sanchez stressed the necessity for the international community to acknowledge the existence of the Palestinian state, describing it as a just demand supported by the majority.
Advocating for the European Union to recognize Palestine, Sanchez faces opposition from Israel and its allies.
Recently, Sanchez, along with leaders from Ireland, Malta, and Slovenia, expressed readiness to recognize Palestine to aid in resolving the ongoing conflict in Gaza, where thousands have lost their lives.
Meetings with leaders from Norway and Portugal are scheduled to further discuss this matter, as confirmed by Spanish government spokeswoman Pilar Alegria.
During a recent visit to Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar, Sanchez hinted at Spain’s potential recognition of Palestine by the end of June, emphasizing the need for full UN membership for Palestine.
In an interview with Al Jazeera, Sanchez reiterated Spain’s readiness to support and recognize the State of Palestine, highlighting the importance of a new approach to the longstanding issue.
Last week, the Palestinian Authority formally requested the United Nations Security Council to reconsider its 2011 application for full membership, as it currently holds observer status.
