Returning to the Roots of Assassin’s Creed Mirage Won’t Suffice

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is the next addition to the well-loved Ubisoft franchise. With the new gameplay trailer hinting at the return of some classic features, hopes are that Mirage will redeem the series and bring it back to its roots. But despite all these claims, simply reverting to Assassin’s Creed’s original style won’t be enough to keep future games going.

The release of AC Mirage on October 12 comes at a pivotal time for the series after the release of three questionable additions. From the limited information available, it appears that Mirage is looking to fix everything that’s gone wrong with AC recently. But with the promise of lost features such as social stealth and hidden blade attacks returning, AC Mirage going back to Assassin’s Creed’s roots may not be good enough to redeem the series.

This vastness continues into the characters and plot. Assassin’s Creed has had a protagonist issue for a while, and while this is somewhat amended with the ability to choose a male or female avatar at the beginning of the game, it seems that this choice comes at the cost of characterization. Now instead of one semi-well-written character, the player gets to pick one of two poorly executed shells. Not only is this bad on an individual level, it takes away from the story.

The plot of Assassin’s Creed is expansive. Add on a list of endless characters, and it’s becoming almost impossible to follow the story. While the recent trilogy was a good gateway for new players, fitting the games into the existing timeline is confusing. Instead of trying to insert new time periods into the games, Assassin’s Creed would do much better at building on the lore already established.

Snippets from the gameplay trailer already show the return of hidden-blade combat, social stealth, and a more compact world compared to AC Valhalla and its other counterparts. And as simple as it seems, seeing Basim front and center adorning the Assassin’s hood is a welcome moment of nostalgia that’s been missing from recent AC games. Assassin’s Creed Mirage is doing some work to fix the character and plot problems brought forth by the recent trilogy. By focusing on Basim, not only is there an already existing focal character that players are familiar with, but the prequel to Valhalla bridges some of the plot holes between recent games.
