Playing as a custom character is the optimal choice for the initial playthrough, according to the Chief of Baldur’s Gate 3.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is almost ⁤ready, ‌and if you’re planning to dive⁢ into the expansive role-playing game ‌but unsure whether to choose the original character or create your own, Larian Studios founder and creative director Swen Vincke has some ⁣advice‍ for you.

“I would always choose a custom character and explore their companions,” Vincke said in an interview with Dropped Frames. “I⁣ think origins are better experienced when you replay the game.”

The freedom to create a character to your‌ own liking is appealing in any role-playing game, ‌but it can sacrifice deeper storytelling.⁤ Fortunately, in Baldur’s Gate 3, this is not the case, as custom characters have their own dialogue options and ‌unique story based on your choices.

However, Vincke also notes that at the⁤ beginning of ⁢the game, you can choose the original‍ character. “There’s nothing wrong with ⁣choosing the original character,” he explains. “It’s just… the whole origin‍ system is about where you put the camera. Whose head ‍do you put the ⁣camera in?”

He adds, “If you’re playing three players and playing together, you’ll have ⁢a⁤ good time, [but] you might end up in conflicting⁤ situations where your⁣ interests don’t align with each other’s specializations that shape your origin,‍ which is very fun and works well. But you’ll find out all of this soon enough yourself.”

It is important⁣ to note that there is one option that Vincke does not recommend choosing for the first playthrough: The ‍Dark Urge. Unlike other origins, it is fully customizable but suffers from dark thoughts that drive it to commit acts of violence and cruelty. “As much as I hate to say it, I wouldn’t recommend it for first-time players,” Vincke⁣ says.

“Because you’ll get different versions of the ‍story,⁣ and there will be many events where you‌ could⁢ have gotten something completely different if not for the Dark Urge.” According to the developer, knowing ‍how events typically ‌unfold “works better”‌ as ‌it provides “a completely different perspective.”
