A recent study revealed that over 80% of agricultural subsidies in the EU are directed towards supporting livestock and animal product farming, which has a detrimental impact on the bloc’s climate goals.
Lead author Anniek Kortleve from Leiden University in The Netherlands stated, “We found that the CAP disproportionately supports animal-based products over plant-based alternatives.”
This revelation was surprising as it exceeded previous study findings due to the proper inclusion of feed subsidies, according to Kortleve.
Researchers discovered that half of the subsidies, totaling 57 billion euros ($62 billion) in 2013, were directly allocated to livestock farmers, contributing to high-emissions agriculture.
The remaining subsidies primarily supported livestock, particularly in animal feed production.
