New Study Reveals: Majority of EU Farm Subsidies Support High-Emissions Foods

A recent study revealed that over 80% of agricultural subsidies in the EU ⁣are⁣ directed towards supporting livestock and animal product farming, which has a detrimental impact on the bloc’s climate goals.

Lead author Anniek Kortleve from Leiden‍ University in The Netherlands stated, “We found that the CAP disproportionately supports animal-based ⁤products over⁤ plant-based alternatives.”

This revelation was surprising as ⁢it exceeded previous study findings due to the proper ⁤inclusion of feed subsidies, according to Kortleve.

Researchers discovered that half of the subsidies, totaling 57 billion⁤ euros ($62 billion) in 2013, were directly allocated ‍to livestock farmers, contributing to high-emissions agriculture.

The remaining subsidies primarily⁢ supported livestock, particularly in animal feed production.
