Iran has carried out the execution of four individuals allegedly connected to an Israeli intelligence operation, as reported by Iranian state media. The Supreme Court’s rejection of appeals led to the implementation of the death sentences on Monday. The accused were said to be involved in a plot orchestrated by Israel’s Mossad agency to carry out a bomb attack.
These individuals were found guilty of unlawfully entering Iran from the northern Kurdish region of Iraq with the intention of targeting a factory in Isfahan, a city in central Iran that manufactures equipment for the Ministry of Defence and Armed Forces Logistics. Iranian intelligence managed to thwart the planned operation, which was scheduled for the summer of 2022.
According to Mizan Online, the website of the Iranian judiciary, “The death sentence of four members of a group affiliated with the Zionist spy organisation … was carried out this morning.”
Iran and Israel have a longstanding history of animosity, with ongoing tensions related to Iran’s nuclear program. Israel has accused Iran of supporting militant groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, while Iran has alleged that Israel has been involved in the targeted killings of Iranian officials and scientists, although these claims have not been confirmed by Tel Aviv.
Amnesty International reports that Iran ranks second only to China in the number of executions carried out annually, typically by hanging.
