Despite encountering difficulties in obtaining former President Donald Trump’s records from Twitter (now X), the special counsel investigating the events of January 6th, 2020 was ultimately successful in acquiring a vast amount of information from the website. According to recently unsealed court filings (PDF) shared by Politico, however, it required extensive back-and-forth communication and a significant amount of effort before the counsel could obtain the requested data from Twitter.
Reportedly, the search warrant compelled Twitter to provide all tweets created, drafted, liked, or retweeted by @realdonaldtrump, including any posts that were subsequently deleted. Additionally, the website had to disclose direct messages “sent from, received by, stored in draft form in, or otherwise associated with” @realdonaldtrump, as well as any other accounts linked to it that the former president may have used on the same device.
