Investigators of the January 6th riot acquire Trump’s Twitter direct messages and removed content


Despite encountering difficulties in obtaining former President Donald Trump’s records from Twitter (now X), the special counsel investigating ‌the events of January 6th,⁢ 2020 was ultimately successful in acquiring a vast amount of information from the website.⁤ According to recently⁣ unsealed court filings ⁤(PDF) shared by Politico, however, it required extensive back-and-forth communication​ and a significant ‌amount of effort before the counsel could obtain the requested data from Twitter. 

Reportedly, the search ⁢warrant compelled Twitter to provide all tweets created, drafted, liked, or‍ retweeted by @realdonaldtrump, including any posts that were subsequently deleted. ⁢Additionally, the website had ⁣to ⁢disclose direct⁢ messages “sent from, ‍received by, stored in draft form in, or otherwise associated with”⁢ @realdonaldtrump, as well as ​any other accounts linked to ‍it‌ that the former president may have used on the same ⁣device.
