Gone are the days when purchasing a retail version of Windows 11 meant an ad-free experience. The most recent update to Windows 11 (KB5036980) introduces ads for apps in the “recommended” section of the Start Menu, a crucial part of the operating system.
According to the release notes, the Start menu’s Recommended section will now display Microsoft Store apps from a select group of developers.
While the app suggestions are turned on by default, you can easily revert to an ad-free Windows experience post-update. Simply navigate to Settings, choose Personalization > Start, and toggle off the “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions and more” option.
This new addition comes shortly after being tested in an Insider beta, showcasing Microsoft’s agility in implementing changes. It’s clear that user feedback may not have been a priority in this swift rollout.
