Dragon’s Dogma 2 has just been released, and it introduces a vast, open-world map teeming with content. The original Dragon’s Dogma, which came out in 2012, was set on the expansive island of Gransys, a sizable location in its own right. However, Dragon’s Dogma 2 takes it a step further by featuring an even larger map, set in the two new regions of Vermund and Battahl, along with several other new locations and towns.
The original game took place in the eastern region of the Liogran Peninsula, the primary setting for the Dragon’s Dogma universe. Despite feeling massive, it only represented a small part of the game world found in the lore. The second game follows a similar pattern, covering a substantial portion of the Liogran Peninsula but still larger than both the original Dragon’s Dogma and its expansion, Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen.
According to an interview with DD2’s Director, Hideaki Itsuno, Dragon’s Dogma 2’s map is about four times the size of the original game. However, the development team believes it’s even larger than that, although it hasn’t been officially measured. Dragon’s Dogma 2 boasts one of the largest open-world fantasy maps, offering an experience that feels much more expansive than the narrow corridors featured predominantly in the first game.
Estimating the size of the first Dragon’s Dogma map is challenging, but some anecdotal estimates online suggest it’s around 50%-60% of the size of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’s map, which is a little over 14 square miles. Using this logic, DD2’s map could be anywhere from 28 to 33 square miles, though this is just a general estimate and may differ once the total area of the game is measured. While not as large as other open-world games like Elden Ring, it’s still impressive, especially considering the depth of content found in the game.
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen, released in 2013, included a new region called Bitterblack Isle. This large underground area added to the total area of the game, but it’s generally smaller than the overall section of Gransys featured in the base game.
