Nintendo’s latest first-party offering, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, has the largest file size of any game released by the company to date. The second trailer for the highly anticipated sequel to Breath of the Wild was released during the February 8 Nintendo Direct presentation, and the eShop listing went live shortly afterwards. The game’s file size is 18.2 GB, which is significantly larger than any other Nintendo first-party game, such as Pokemon Legends: Arceus, which has a file size of 6.1 GB. The larger file size of Tears of the Kingdom is likely due to the 4K textures and large audio files used in the game. The game will be released on May 12 and will have a $70 price point.

The iconic and beloved Nintendo franchise, The Legend of Zelda, has set a new milestone with the launch of Breath of the Wild. Despite its seemingly simple aesthetic, the game holds the title of having the largest file size of any Nintendo game ever released.
Since its release in 2017, Breath of the Wild cemented its place and legacy in gaming history as it set the bar for open-world game design. Instead of the traditional, chain-link dungeons and linear progression of previous games in the series, Breath of the Wild gave players much more freedom as they explored the vast and beautiful Hyrule together with the main protagonist Link.
Apart from its innovative open-world design, Breath of the Wild also keeps its place in gaming history for having the largest file size of any title ever released. On a standard Nintendo Switch, the game requires 13.4 GB of free space to download. If you have the digital-downloadable version on the Nintendo Switch, the game will take up much more memory space at a whopping 16.3 GB of RAM.
The game operates on a relatively new color system, having HD (high definition), ultra HD, and the master mode, the master mode alone weighing in at 15.1 GB. And, with the majority of the content being downloadable, Breath of the Wild continues to expand and even offer additional DLC content for the players to explore.
It is undoubtedly worth noting that Breath of the Wild is not only one of the most beloved and most successful Zelda titles ever released by Nintendo but also that it has become a cultural benchmark for open-world games. And despite its relatively small pixel art, the huge file size of this game has enabled new technology that has been influential to many other titles that have followed.
