Does Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora Align with the Movie Canon?

Players got a new look at Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora during the June 2023 Ubisoft Forward event, nearly two years on from its original announcement, alongside some story details, and whether the game will be canon to James Cameron’s record-breaking movies or not. Whereas Ubisoft’s previous Avatar movie tie-in told a more linear prequel story to the 2009 movie from either side of the conflict, Frontiers of Pandora will give players the chance to explore a large section of Pandora in a massive open-world experience.

Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment created the upcoming Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora in collaboration with Disney and James Cameron’s production company, Lightstorm Entertainment. The combination of Massive’s experience with huge open-world games, and the minds behind the movies, should hopefully give Avatar fans a game that honors the wildly successful movies while telling its own unique story.

While this does mean that the narrative will likely be impacted by the timeline from the movies, players won’t experience them first-hand due to being in a different area. It also makes it unlikely that the game will include cameos from the cast of the movies as Frontiers of Pandora seems to have its own set of characters and tribes with their own unique stories to tell.

Similarly to the movies, Avatar: Frontiers Of Pandora will focus on the conflict between the alien Na’vi tribe, and the human-led RDA who seeks to plunder Pandora for resources. Whereas the first Avatar movie told the story of a human, Jake Sully, who inhabited a human/Na’vi hybrid avatar to explore Pandora, Ubisoft’s new gameplay footage revealed Frontiers of Pandora will have players assuming control of a character who was born as a Na’vi but raised and trained by the RDA after being abducted by one of its leaders as a child.

When the RDA’s plans were disrupted by the Battle of the Hallelujah Mountains, the main character was put into an emergency cryosleep. 15 years later, around the same time that Avatar: The Way of Water takes place, this main character awakens and finds themselves a stranger on their own planet, and players must reconnect with Pandora’s nature and wildlife while using a combination of skills learned during their RDA training and knowledge acquired through Na’vi tactics to fend off the RDA and restore the planet to its natural state.
