D&D Unveils Bizarre New Creatures in Phandelver & Below: The Shattered Obelisk

The new Dungeons & ⁤Dragons monsters coming ‍to 5e via the ⁤upcoming book, Phandelver and Below: The⁣ Shattered Obelisk, lean ‍into its cosmic horror themes. ⁣With its Lovecraftian inspirations, The ‍Shattered Obelisk has a style and tone reminiscent‍ of classic pulp horror ⁤comics. In a‌ presentation with game designers last week, ⁣Screen Rant got‌ a glimpse of these weird and strangely horrifying new monsters.

From a dairy cow with⁤ tentacles growing ⁣out its sides to a terrifying enemy made from melded flesh, the new⁤ D&D creatures shown so far for Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk all have one ‍thing ‌in‌ common – they’re really weird. ‌This seems to be ⁣a theme for the new book, as ⁢D&D’s own ⁢Amanda‍ Hammon and Bree Heiss used the term quite ⁣often when describing the monsters, the tone, and what kind of story adventurers can⁣ expect‍ when the book ⁤drops on September ‍19, 2023.

During the presentation, many ⁤new D&D 5e monsters and NPCs were⁣ shown off. And while this isn’t a complete list‌ of the bestiary in Phandelver and Below, the new monsters showcased for The Shattered Obelisk so far include:

The‍ common⁣ theme here, of⁢ course, is a combination ‍of cosmic weirdness and otherworldly magic that fans of H.P. Lovecraft ‌stories like “The Colour Out of Space” would surely enjoy. Even now, the‌ game designers‍ are teasing Phandelver and Below: ⁣The Shattered Obelisk ⁤as containing some of ⁣the strangest D&D 5e‌ content to date with some of the‌ weirdest D&D⁢ monsters ever.

The ⁤official release date for the new book is September 19, 2023. However, digital early access‌ for Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk will start on September 5, ‍2023, on D&D Beyond. Around the⁣ first third of the campaign is a‌ remaster of “The Lost Mines of Phandelver,” ⁢the popular⁢ adventure found within the Starter Set. This “remastered” content includes more fleshed-out encounters and choices, while the‍ last ⁤two-thirds of the book ⁤will be brand-new content. From ‍everything shown so far, Phandelver and Below ⁤looks like an exciting – and weird – addition to Dungeons & Dragons 5e.
