If there was one thing that kept me coming back to Homeworld, it was skirmish mode. Setting up a quick (“quick”) battle against the CPU would often consume my entire weekend while I was in college. Homeworld 3 introduces a new mode in its second sequel, called War Games, which is a multiplayer co-op inspired by roguelike games. It allows one, two, or three players to face off against the enemy in a series of randomized challenges, where progression is only possible if you can survive. I have been playing an early build of this mode for the past few days, and I must say it is quite impressive, especially considering the fact that I usually find the terms “roguelike” and “multiplayer co-op” to be unappealing.
Each campaign begins with a predetermined fleet. You are given the choice of one fleet early on, and as you accumulate more XP, additional options become available. You then have to complete a series of three missions, each set in a different environment, until you defeat the opponent’s carrier.
