Capturing many Legendaries in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is simple with the use of a certain sandwich. Sandwiches are an extremely popular food in the Paldea region, similar to Galar’s curries before them. Sandwiches also confer a number of benefits when eaten, such as a boost to capturing various kinds of Pokémon.
Sandwiches can easily be considered the signature food of the Paldea region, carrying on the tradition of new regions being associated with a new foodstuff. For example, making plenty of Hoenn’s Pokéblocks is crucial for gaining an advantage in Pokémon Contests, similar to Sinnoh’s Poffins. However, sandwiches in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet are arguably the most versatile type of player-made foods yet. Different sandwiches are made during picnics using the various ingredients purchasable all around Paldea. Furthermore, each provides a different set of Meal Powers of varying strengths. These confer boosts to many aspects of gameplay, including the often difficult and lengthy process of hunting Shiny Pokémon.
The Treasures of Ruin are found in shrines hidden around Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Paldea, each requiring eight stakes in the surrounding area to be pulled from the ground in order to be unsealed. Each is the animate form of an ancient treasure, brought to life through the grief and anger caused by an evil king’s actions. The four Legendary Pokémon are each the bringer of a devastating natural disaster, such as avalanches and earthquakes. As such, it is little wonder that the Treasures of Ruin share the Dark-type as their primary type. Often associated with malevolence and cruelty, it is also known as the Evil-type in Japan.
Each of the Treasures of Ruin has a catch rate of 6, meaning that if a player has eight badges, a basic Poké Ball thrown when the Pokémon is in perfect health has a mere 2.6% chance of capturing it. For comparison, Lechonk has a catch rate of 255, meaning a 43.9% chance of capture under the same circumstances. Eating an Ultra Jam Sandwich, on the other hand, raises the Legendary’s catch rate to 3.1%. Although the difference may seem negligible, it must be noted that the catch rate formula is complex and takes into account many variables, all of which combine to improve the odds dramatically.
Variables that affect Pokémon’s capture formula naturally include damage dealt and status conditions, but in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, the number of badges held by a player is also taken into account. There is a penalty applied if a player tries to capture a Pokémon whose level would make it unwilling to obey them based on their Badges (beginning at more than five Levels over the player’s current maximum), with the specific penalty increasing the more Badges are required to secure this obedience. As the Treasures of Ruin are encountered at Level 60, this means that the player will need at least seven gym badges to avoid incurring this penalty.
