Starfield has a massive map with over 1,000 planets – both handcrafted and procedurally generated – across 100 Star Systems, and there is plenty of potential for each of them. On any of the planets, players can land and have the option to harvest resources. Depending on whether a location is inhabited or not, players can use these acquired resources to build outposts. With an abundance of land available for players to build upon, it raises the question of whether there is a limit to the number of outposts that can be constructed.
Fans of another Bethesda RPG, Fallout 4, will likely find this mechanic familiar as it bears similarities to the settlement building feature in that game. However, building outposts in Starfield appears to have more purpose and is a more comprehensive feature. The potential for building outposts is vast, and players can create empires consisting of various buildings, such as giant industrial factory outposts that operate across multiple star systems and provide abundant resources for sale. Alternatively, outposts can serve as residential bases where crew members can be assigned, or they can be used for storage, power sources, mining equipment, and more.
Unfortunately, there is a limit to the number of outposts that can be built in Starfield. Initially, players are limited to constructing eight outposts. Each time an Outpost Beacon is placed, it counts as an outpost slot, and this information can be tracked using the scanner next to the “Build Outpost” button.
If players discover another planet where they would prefer to build later in their journey but have already used up all the available slots, they can easily demolish past outposts. This can be done by traveling to the Outpost Beacon, targeting it until the “Rename” prompt appears, and then holding the X button on Xbox or R on PC to remove it. Fortunately, this does not prevent players from rebuilding on the same spot later if they change their minds.
There are ways to increase the maximum number of outposts available in Starfield through the skill tree. The Planetary Habitation skill, found in the Science tree, is the key. Each rank of the skill adds four additional outpost slots and unlocks the ability to build in harsher environments. For example, Rank 1 allows a total of 12 outposts and enables construction on planets with Deep Freeze or Inferno temperatures. By the time players reach Rank 4, there are a total of 24 outpost slots available, including planets with extreme pressure, gravity, or corrosive and toxic atmospheres.
