A fairly early quest in Baldur’s Gate 3 will have the party searching for, and potentially coming into possession of, a caravan strongbox, which may entice some loot-hungry players into opening it rather than returning the box to those searching for it. The quest in question is “Find the Missing Shipment,” which can be started in a handful of ways. And just like much of the roleplay-heavy Baldur’s Gate 3, there are a number of different ways for the quest to end as well, including cracking open the caravan strongbox and taking its contents.
Regardless of how the quest is started, not far outside the Blighted Village is a grim scene in which a caravan has been attacked by gnolls. The party will eventually discover – possibly through talking to the dead caravan agent – a number of survivors have taken shelter in a nearby cave, though they’re surrounded by yet more gnolls. Inside said cave is where the caravan strongbox is found, though obtaining it may require killing the rest of the survivors. The caravan strongbox in Baldur’s Gate 3 is seemingly sought after, so it may seem worth the effort to pick its lock.
Inside the caravan strongbox from the ”Find the Missing Shipment” quest is 18 gold, a Viridian Crystal, and an Iron Flask. The gold and crystal aren’t worth much in the long run, but the Iron Flask is “decorated with a grinning face,” and a successful Arcana check will reveal that a creature has been captured inside. Opening the flask will release a level five spectator, a dangerous enemy so early in the game. The Iron Flask from the caravan strongbox is best held for later, as it can be thrown at enemies to sow chaos in an encounter, but it’ll have to be defeated one way or another regardless.
The Iron Flask that can be gotten from the caravan strongbox during “Find the Missing Shipment” in Baldur’s Gate 3 is a novel item, but it may cause more trouble than its worth. There’s no guarantee the spectator inside will be particularly useful in battle once it’s released, and may turn on the party at an inopportune time. Additionally, not returning the caravan strongbox to Zarys at the Zhentarim Hideout will sour relations with the mercenary company, which may introduce frustrating roadblocks during other quests or interactions.
