As the Switch’s library continues to grow, The Legend of Zelda has built up a sizable presence on the system, with original Switch titles like Breath of the Wild being supplemented by spinoffs, remasters, remakes, and ports of older games in the series. As one of Nintendo’s flagship franchises, it’s certainly not surprising to see it heavily represented in the Switch’s library. Given the series’ long history, however, some of the Zelda games present on the Switch might be lesser known.
Thanks to the May release of Tears of the Kingdom and the recent addition of a few classic Zelda titles to the Nintendo Switch Online library of games, 2023 has shaped up to be a big year for the Zelda franchise’s presence on the Switch. With Breath of the Wild being a breakout hit, even by the lofty standards set by previous Zelda games, the increased presence of the series in the Switch’s library represents a chance for newer fans to go back and try the more classic titles they might have missed, with some remasters, remakes, and ports of older games making them more widely available.
The most recent Zelda release on the Nintendo Switch came in the form of Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons’ arrival on Nintendo Switch Online, making these classic handheld titles available for the first time since the 3DS eShop. 2023 has been a big year for handheld Zelda games on the platform, with Link’s Awakening DX and The Minish Cap having originally arrived in February. There’s plenty to occupy Zelda fans who have finished their expansive adventures in Tears of the Kingdom, ranging from straight ports of old classics to modernized remakes and remasters and even a few unique spinoffs like the rhythm game Cadence of Hyrule.
While Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom are the obvious stars of the Switch’s ever-expanding Zelda library, there is a myriad of other games available on the platform, with past entries Skyward Sword and Link’s Awakening having received a remaster and remake, respectively. Still, a fair few Zelda games are noticeably missing from the Switch, meaning that some newer fans could be missing out on some of Link’s smaller adventures before the open-world games. The full list of Zelda games on the Switch in 2023 is as follows:
The list of Zelda games on the Switch is impressive, with the series’ presence on the system perhaps only outdone by Mario. Some noticeable absences do remain, with The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess being two major games with remasters currently stuck on the Wii U. While Nintendo tends not to make announcements too far in advance, it’s a safe bet that more from The Legend of Zelda will be making its way onto the Switch in the future.
