Cyberpunk 2077‘s cyberware system will undergo a complete overhaul in the Phantom Liberty DLC, promising a fresh and exciting experience. In the base game, cybernetic upgrades already set the dystopian RPG apart from other first-person titles, allowing players to enhance their bodies with technological implants for increased firepower, improved stats, and special abilities. With the cyberware rework in Phantom Liberty, players can expect an even more immersive system that aims to shake up the game even further.
Aside from the updated cyberware system, the upcoming DLC will introduce other new content. Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty will expand V’s story, taking them to a new district called Dogtown on a noble mission to save NUSA’s President, Rosalind Myers. Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the iconic Johnny Silverhand, and English actor Idris Elba will also join the cast as FIA agent Solomon Reed. With its spy-thriller narrative, the DLC promises high-octane action and gripping mysteries, with the cyberware overhaul adding the perfect finishing touch.
According to Gamespot, which had a brief hands-on preview of the expansion, cyberware in Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty has undergone a “complete overhaul.” Instead of being tied to the character’s outfit, V’s armor stats will now be linked to their cybernetic upgrades, giving players more freedom to dress and style their character in any clothing they choose. However, this doesn’t mean players can freely install all the best implants at any ripperdoc clinic in the game. In fact, caution is advised, as installing too many upgrades can result in unwanted debuffs for the character.
CD Projekt Red has confirmed, as reported by Video Games Chronicle, that these debuffs won’t go as far as introducing cyberpsychosis. While this may disappoint fans who enjoyed the plot of the Netflix anime, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, it makes sense since cyberpsychosis would realistically cause players to lose control over their character. Instead, overloading on cyberware will likely result in stat-based debuffs, such as reduced health, similar to Geralt’s Toxicity system in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt.
Fortunately, it seems that the protagonist will have a way to increase their tolerance to cyberware, allowing them to handle more and higher-quality tech. Video Games Chronicles mentions a “new Edgerunners perk” that will assist players in this regard, suggesting that characters can develop an unnaturally high tolerance for cyberware, similar to Edgerunners’ David Martinez. It also appears that players can naturally increase their cyberware capacity as they level up and progress through the game.
