What led to July becoming the hottest month on record worldwide?

According⁣ to climate⁣ scientists, July is ‌expected⁤ to be the hottest month‍ on⁣ record worldwide and potentially the warmest in 120,000 years.

“We ‍don’t need to wait‌ until the end ⁢of the month to confirm this. Unless ‍there is⁤ a sudden drastic change in weather, July 2023 will ⁢break all records,” stated UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday.

This prediction comes ‍as heatwaves have affected ‌large areas of Europe, North Africa, North America,⁢ and Asia.

The first three weeks ⁢of July have already been recorded as the warmest period ‌compared to the⁤ average temperatures⁢ of the first 23 days of July from 1940 to 2023.

This ‌surpasses the previous record set in 2019 for the entire month ⁣of July, with a surface air temperature of 16.95C (62.51F) compared to 16.63C ‌(61.93F).

During the first and third‍ weeks, temperatures briefly exceeded the 1.5C (34.7F) limit established in the Paris Agreement.
