In a groundbreaking move, the Italian Bishops Conference (CIE) has announced new guidelines allowing gay men to pursue priesthood in Roman Catholic seminaries as long as they commit to celibacy.
This decision represents a departure from Pope Francis’ previous stance that barred gay men from entering seminaries due to concerns about leading double lives.
Emphasizing the importance of aspiring priests demonstrating a dedication to celibacy, the CIE highlighted that discernment should not solely focus on sexual orientation during the formative process.
While affirming respect for individuals with homosexual tendencies, the CIE clarified that sexually active gay men are ineligible for admission into seminaries or any other sacred orders.
Pope Francis faced criticism last year for using an offensive term when discussing admitting gay men into seminaries, prompting him to issue a rare apology and express his commitment to inclusivity towards LGBTQ+ individuals.
The pope’s efforts towards greater acceptance were evident when he approved a ruling allowing priests to bless unmarried and same-sex couples in December 2023, signaling a significant shift within the Catholic church.
