After its rude treatment from Ganondorf at the start of the game, it’s thankfully possible to recover Link’s iconic Master Sword in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – but it can be unclear how much damage it actually does. Unlike all other weapons in the game, the legendary blade doesn’t display its damage stats in the inventory menu, which can naturally lead to confusion and uncertainty of its true power in the newest Zelda title.

In reality, the Master Sword only does about 30 damage in Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This number means that the weapon has remained stagnant since Breath of the Wild, which is surprising, considering what happens to the Master Sword in TOTK. Luckily, damage numbers aren’t the only thing that the sword retains. It doesn’t take up any space in the inventory, and it’s impossible to break, only needing to recharge periodically.
Breath of the Wild’s The Master Trials DLC gave players a way to upgrade the Master Sword’s base attack damage, but in Tears of the Kingdom, there aren’t any quests that can boost the Master Sword’s capabilities; at least for now, it’s stuck at 30 damage. This may be disappointing at first, but TOTK’s alternative to traditional upgrades is ultimately much more interesting. Instead of receiving a flat damage buff, Link can improve the Master Sword by using his newfound Fuse ability, attaching various materials or even other weapons to give it unique elemental effects and temporary increases to damage.
