McDonald’s Pokémon Trading Card Game promotion is back with special cards featuring a selection of characters from the Paldea region that were introduced with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet last year. The fast-food giant has held eight promotions with Pokémon in the past and its cards can include a special confetti-style holofoil pattern unique to McDonald’s. Although the cards are difficult to come by due to a rush of fans wanting to collect them all, this also means that often the Happy Meal event cards can be valued higher and make for fun additions to any collection.
2023’s Pokémon Happy Meals will feature 15 cards provided at random for consumers along with other Pokémon themed items. Each Happy Meal will contain one pack of four Pokémon cards with one of the cards featuring the unique McDonald’s holofoil pattern. Additionally, each of the meals will have a cardboard spinner toy for the Pokémon Match Battle game. All the cards included are reprints of ones already available in the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet expansion of the Pokémon TCG with the special M23 icon on the bottom corner, and renumbered to reflect the McDonald’s promotion.
The limited-time Happy Meal event is scheduled to start in McDonald’s restaurants in the United States on September 12, 2023, and run until October 16, although availability will vary. In past years, scalpers and eager collectors have rushed to buy Happy Meals, causing shortages and making the cards difficult to obtain. Many other countries, including the UK, have already begun their promotion at McDonald’s restaurants, which provides a good look at what the most coveted and most valuable cards from this year’s event are.
Because McDonald’s restaurants in the United States have not begun their Pokémon Happy Meals by the time of writing, deciphering which are the most valuable cards is currently based on online sales values in the UK, particularly by looking at sold items from the UK eBay. As was the case previously with 2022’s most valuable McDonald’s cards, the items selling at the highest rates are the rarer holofoil versions of cards. Despite the novelty of the promotion including Pokémon from the Paldea region, so far the card with the greatest value is none other than the holofoil Pikachu, with eBay sales close to $10 USD per card. After Pikachu, the next most valuable cards include the holofoils of the three starter Pokémon from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet: Fuecoco, Sprigatito, and Quaxly which go for around $6 to $8 USD each.
In general, the majority of sales for the McDonald’s promotional event Pokémon cards are not for individual items but for bundles of the entire set of 15 cards or for auctions that group all the holofoil cards together. The ease of ordering a completed set is appealing, and these generally run for up to the equivalent of nearly $40 USD on eBay. Many sales for large quantities of unopened mystery packs are also popular, giving people the opportunity to experience the thrill…
