Valve Encourages the Use of AI in Games

Last week, there was widespread speculation that Valve might ban games utilizing AI-generated content, following a Reddit post suggesting such a restriction. However, Valve’s response to Polygon indicates that the situation is far from straightforward.

It never seemed likely that Valve would ban AI art. The company, known for its libertarian approach, aims to minimize restrictions on Steam’s content and avoids involvement in political matters. This is evident in the abundance of low-quality porn games and asset flips on the store. Valve’s concern for the morality of a subject is questionable, considering it has approved the sale of five “Sex With Hitler” games in the past year.

Valve, however, has distanced itself from the controversy in a statement to Polygon. The company clarifies that it does not want to discourage the use of AI in game development. Instead, Valve suggests that existing copyright laws may address the issue of AI-generated assets.
