The Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion became the last game project for CD Projekt RED to use their own REDengine. The team has officially transitioned to Unreal Engine 5 and will actively use new technologies during the development of the sequel. Despite changing engines, the developers plan to actively utilize the assets from the original Cyberpunk 2077.
Game Director Gabe Amatangelo recently assured investors and fans who are concerned about the production timeline of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel. According to him, creating the second installment will take the studio less time than the first game. The developers will be aided by the assets from the original project, although the exact details were not specified. Presumably, this refers to visual materials and certain universal engineering systems.
In the interview, Amatangelo admitted that Unreal Engine 5 may pose additional difficulties for the developers. However, he remains optimistic about this factor. According to the developer, this engine already demonstrates high universality and stability. It will save CD Projekt RED time on optimization and customization, and the engineers from Epic Games will provide active assistance.
Recall that the development of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel was officially announced in October 2022. The game is codenamed Project Orion, and full development will begin in early 2024 under the guidance of the Phantom Liberty expansion creators.
