The Drive Gauge, also known as the Drive Meter, in Street Fighter 6 is the new and improved replacement for the V Gauge of Street Fighter 5. An additional meter system allows players to amp up their attacks if used strategically. However, if it isn’t mastered early, other fighters can easily punish it.
The Drive Gauge has five moves that affect it by either draining or refilling it, and they are Drive Impact, Overdrive, Drive Parry, Drive Rush, and Drive Reversal. All of these are great assets to any fighter in every mode of Street Fighter 6, but be wary of draining the meter entirely, which will put fighters into a burnout state, making them very vulnerable.
The Drive Gauge allows players to punish defensive play while still being smart with their own defense. For example, the Drive Gauge will drain when blocking hits but refill if successfully parrying. Additionally, despite the loss of the Stun Bar in Street Fighter 6’s gameplay, fighters can still be pushed into a stunned state. This is achieved if, while in the Burnout state following a completely drained Drive Gauge, the same fighter attempts to Block a Drive Impact that slams them into a wall. This will achieve the reminiscent Stunned State and leave the fighter completely vulnerable.
There are five moves that affect the Drive Gauge in Street Fighter 6, as discussed above, they’re Drive Impact, Overdrive, Drive Parry, Drive Rush, and Drive Reversal. Each one has its own effects on the Drive Gauge with varying costs, while some, such as Parry, even can help refill it if used properly. All of these moves are advantageous to the fighter if used correctly, but if used incorrectly or missed, they are also easily punishable by the opponent.
Drive Impact is activated by pressing both Heavy Punch and Heavy Kick simultaneously. For seasoned players of Street Fighter, it is reminiscent of Focus Attacks from Street Fighter 4 because it is an attack with a long wind-up and three hits of super armor, meaning that fighters can take two hits without being interrupted. This is primarily used as a counterattack to allow fighters to push through an opponent’s attacks and land a counter-hit, leaving opponents staggered and vulnerable to a follow-up attack.
