The classic Star Wars: Battlefront games from Pandemic Studios have a special place in the hearts of Star Wars fans. Aspyr’s announcement of bringing them to modern platforms in the Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the titles generated a lot of excitement among fans. However, the launch has been a disappointment, leading to a significant backlash from fans.
Shortly after its release, Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection received an “Overwhelmingly Negative” review score on Steam, a sharp decline from the “Mostly Negative” rating it had at launch. This was unexpected, especially considering the re-release promised the return of popular modes like Hero Assault and Conquest, as well as new maps and characters such as Asajj Ventress and Kit Fisto, offering a complete Star Wars: Battlefront experience for modern players.
On launch night, over 10,000 players attempted to access Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection, but only three multiplayer servers were available, each allowing up to 64 players, totaling just 192 spaces. This was a stark contrast to the high demand, especially in a gaming landscape where games like Helldivers 2 can have over 300,000 concurrent players on Steam alone.
Additional servers were added within an hour of the launch, and Aspyr acknowledged the need for more to meet player demand. However, many players reported severe lag and performance issues in multiplayer, indicating that more work is required to optimize the multiplayer experience.
Aspyr addressed these issues, attributing them to “critical errors” in its network infrastructure, resulting in high ping, matchmaking errors, crashes, and server visibility issues. The company assured that it is actively working to resolve these issues and improve network stability.
