A leak has revealed that Microsoft will announce Xbox Game Pass Core, a new tier for its popular subscription service. Previously, Xbox Game Pass had three different versions: one for Console, one for PC, and Ultimate, which incorporated both PC, Console, and Xbox Cloud Gaming. It also had Xbox Live Gold, something which originated as a higher tier for its Xbox Live service during the days of the Xbox 360 and granted players free games each month alongside granting them access to online modes in games.
Since then, Microsoft made more of a push to get its players to move from Xbox Live to Xbox Game Pass, offering hundreds of games for a monthly subscription instead. This service proved to be popular and grew, while Xbox Live Gold reduced its number of free games each month, cutting out the backward compatible Xbox 360 offerings and largely offering more indie titles under its Games With Gold deal, saving AAA titles for Xbox Game Pass instead.
As shared by Wario64 on Twitter, Xbox Live Gold will transition to Xbox Game Pass Core on September 1, 2023, after 21 years of the Xbox Live service. Existing Xbox Live Gold subscribers will automatically be converted to Xbox Game Pass Core subscribers without needing to do anything on their end, and will receive discounts on purchases that Xbox Game Pass subscribers can normally access.
In the screenshot, it is revealed that the Xbox Game Pass Core tier will cost $9.99 per month. This will be a dollar less than the Xbox Game Pass Console subscription, pricing it around the same as the PC Xbox Game Pass subscription.
With Xbox Live coming to a close, Games With Gold will also end on September 1. However, players will receive more than 25 Xbox Game Pass titles in their subscriptions instead. This may be a portion of the titles included in the main service but is significantly more than the three monthly titles offered in the Games With Gold deal. While it will lack the day-one releases of the main subscription tiers, Xbox Game Pass Core will grant access to several acclaimed titles from major franchises such as DOOM Eternal, Dishonored 2, Gears 5, and Forza Horizon 4, and more, with the list intended to grow in the months that follow.
