Unbeknownst to You, Starfield Holds a Hidden Goldmine

Starfield offers ‍plenty of ways to make money, but one method‍ of racking up cash relies on a surprising resource⁢ that might just be sitting around otherwise. Monetary success is an enviable goal in the⁤ interplanetary RPG from Bethesda Game Studios, as spaceships and equipment can add up very ⁢quickly. It’s easy to generate a certain cash flow through⁤ standard questing and exploring, a revenue stream that can be supplemented by selling contraband, building an Outpost, or more, but it⁣ doesn’t have to take as much work ⁣as any of these ⁣options.

Exploration ‌in Starfield is all about‍ the‌ scanner, which can help track down resources and identify characteristics of planets and the life that inhabits them. These are far from the only uses of the scanner, as scanning⁢ people in Starfield can help with Intimidation and pointing it ⁣at a destination makes for a more ‌seamless‌ fast travel experience than using the Starmap. Its identification purposes, however, are what the scanner‍ tends to spend the most time using. Gaining data about‌ planets is helpful for gathering resources, and is broadly interesting, but this information has still‍ more that it can achieve beyond sitting around in a database.

The key to making money off of survey data lies in the NPC Vladimir Sall,‌ a former pirate of the Crimson Fleet Starfield faction who has left that path behind him to join Constellation. Vladimir ⁣can be found on The Eye, a star station operated by ⁢Constellation in Jemison’s orbit. He will gladly fork ⁢over credits in exchange for survey data, paying twice the rates⁣ that the ‍Trade‌ Authority will for any individual slate. Although it might be more convenient to offload data at the Trade Authority on occasion, this huge price differential is impossible‌ to ‌ignore.

There’s no ⁤need to worry about missing Vladimir if he hasn’t yet cropped up in a playthrough, as he has a distinct role to play in the main story of Starfield. Getting survey data is only one part of Vladimir’s interest⁢ in scanning the galaxy, ‌as the ⁢mission “Into the Unknown” sees him task the protagonist with tracking down several artifacts picked up by scanning. Although several missions precede “Into the Unknown,”⁣ it’s still one of the earlier ones in the game, so ‍it‌ won’t take⁤ too long to⁤ start offloading data on Vladimir.

Although scanning each new planet can be⁢ done ⁣for pleasure alone, having a solid ⁤financial incentive to reach‍ the 100% mark⁣ helps make it feel like a worthwhile and rewarding task in Starfield. Vladimir’s generosity is a huge part in accomplishing this sensation, as the Trade Authority’s rates are nowhere near as impressive as his personal offers. Letting slates of survey data sit around in the inventory is a‍ surefire ⁤method ‌of losing out on major profits, so remembering to drop by The Eye every now and then is the ‌best way‌ to stay solvent in Starfield.
