Turkey Bans Twitch and Kick for Promoting Gambling Activities

The National Lottery Association of‌ Turkey has ‍taken action‌ to ban Twitch and Kick due to⁤ concerns about promoting gambling,⁤ particularly⁣ to minors. This move ⁣comes in response to the widespread practice of streamers, including some⁢ of the⁢ most‍ popular ones, being sponsored by gambling⁤ companies‍ to endorse their products.

In 2022, ⁣Twitch⁤ revised its policies following criticism from streamers, notably Pokimane, in the‍ wake of Sliker’s admission of misleading viewers. This indicates a⁣ growing awareness of the ethical implications of promoting gambling on the‌ platform.

Kick, on the other hand, was specifically designed to facilitate the sale of such content and was even backed by a major online‌ gambling ⁢platform founder. It is⁢ clear that gambling plays a ⁢significant role ⁤in the business of⁢ streaming⁣ video platforms.

Journalist Ibrahim Haskologlu reported that Turkey’s⁤ decision to ban Twitch and Kick was prompted by Kick’s targeted efforts to lure‍ young Turks into gambling. This was followed by a ban on Twitch, with an investigation launched to verify claims⁤ of gambling-related‍ content on the platform.

It remains to‌ be⁣ seen whether Twitch ⁤will be able to overturn‌ the ban, but for now, the message is clear: ⁤Turkey is⁤ taking a ⁣stand against the promotion of gambling‌ on streaming platforms.
