A tragic fire has devastated a dormitory at a boarding school in central China, resulting in the loss of 13 young lives, as reported by state media.
The blaze at Yingcai School in Henan province’s Yanshanpu village also left one student injured, according to the Xinhua news agency.
The victims were all third-grade elementary school students, all from the same class of nine and ten-year-olds, as confirmed by a teacher to the state-run Hebei Daily.
Firefighters acted swiftly to extinguish the fire, which was reported at 11pm (15:00 GMT) on Friday. The school’s head was taken into custody as authorities investigate the cause of the tragic incident.
The injured survivor is currently receiving treatment in the hospital and is said to be in a stable condition, as per Xinhua.
China National Radio reported that some windows in the school’s dormitory building were broken, and photos published showed police cordoning off the area.
