With Tower of Fantasy‘s arrival on the PS4 and PS5, the possibilities of crossplay and cross-save features in the game are more important than ever. The history of PlayStation crossplay has been mixed in recent years, with Sony initially showcasing a reluctance to embrace it with the same fervor as Microsoft. Although the PS4 ultimately began to allow crossplay, a policy that has continued with the PS5, plenty of games across both PlayStation and other consoles individually lack crossplay capabilities. For a game with a history on mobile and PC like Tower of Fantasy, cross-save features may be even more important.
Tower of Fantasy first released worldwide for Android, iOS, and PC in August 2022, following a December 2021 release in China. As a free-to-play RPG aimed at a similar market to titles like Genshin Impact and its improved successor Honkai: Star Rail, the game delivers a polished open-world experience that would have once been foreign to mobile platforms. Crossplay and cross-save capabilities are available on PC and phones, allowing a save file to be easily played on-the-go and at home with a seamless transition. As the PlayStation release is a later addition, however, it doesn’t fit into an identical scheme.
The PS4 and PS5 release of Tower of Fantasy unfortunately does not feature compatibility with other versions of the game. Progress from mobile and PC platforms cannot be shared with the PlayStation release and vice versa, and team-ups will be likewise impossible across the two distinct releases. Veterans of the game will only be able to use the new version as a springboard for a fresh playthrough, while newcomers will need to know PlayStation progress doesn’t transfer to the pocket. With no established plans for other console releases of Tower of Fantasy, it seems that PlayStation is its own bubble for the game.
As a live-service game with gacha elements, Tower of Fantasy has featured a long succession of time-limited releases and events since its launch. The PlayStation release being separate does have the advantage giving the game a fresh start on the platform, preventing online interactions from showcasing high-level characters and abilities that won’t be accessible with a new file. For the moment, the playing field will be even, although a continued influx of new players across time will eventually establish this gap once again.
