“Top 10 Video Games Featuring LGBTQIA+ Playable Characters”

Video games provide an opportunity for players to live out their fantasies and become part of the stories being told. For members of the LGBTQIA community, it is especially important to find games that allow them to play as characters that represent them. It is crucial for the full spectrum of sexuality to be present in gaming, enabling LGBTQIA players to play as LGBTQIA characters.

For a long time, the protagonists of video games were straight white men, which was disappointing for a medium that immerses its consumers into the story. However, the games industry has started to change, and more queer stories are being told, allowing LGBTQIA players to see themselves reflected in the games they love. Although there is still a way to go in terms of representation, there are some great games out there with LGBTQIA player characters.

Throughout the franchise, Sims have traditionally been bisexual, having no preference for either gender in the game. Updates have been consistently adding more options, from removing gendered barriers to Sims clothes to allowing Simmers to set their Sims pronouns and sexual orientation in The Sims 4. To date, The Sims 4 has offered players the largest number of options to create a Sim that truly represents themselves.

Star Wars: The Old Republic, like many Bioware games, offers players the option to romance one of their character’s companions. While the only options available at launch were straight relationships, this has since been remedied in further expansions. The first update came in the form of two short-term romances in Rise of the Hutt Cartel, the first SWTOR expansion with Cytharat for male Imperial players, and Lemda Avesta for both genders of Republic players.

While a step in the right direction, this option was lacking, and so queer players were much happier when more options were added in the Shadow of Revan expansion. Lana Beniko and Theron Shan were available for flirting for both genders, with a full romance added in Knights of the Fallen Empire. Since then, more same-sex romance options have been added in subsequent expansions allowing love to flourish in all its forms in a galaxy far, far away.
