Pirates are a beloved subject in fiction, and from The Legend of Zelda to Assassin’s Creed, the best pirate video games show just how much fun the concept can bring to the table. Although most works of pirate media exhibit romanticized versions of one of the darkest and harshest eras in history, pirates catch the eyes of viewers who yearn for that ideal of adventure and freedom. Video game developers have taken full advantage of this over the years, although only the best pirate games fully realize the potential of the premise.
Sailing the high seas, plundering for treasure, and maybe fighting the occasional skeleton pirate have been staple features in gaming, especially after the popularity of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise. Several games have also taken the pirate concept to the skies or even space, like Skies of Arcadia and Rogue Galaxy. Sticking to the basics, however, keeps the focus on the pirate video games that truly tap into the pleasure of the open sea.
From the music to the visuals to sailing around on Link’s living boat, the atmosphere of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker gives a feeling of adventure. It helps the player feel immersed in this world of pirates and magic akin to Pirates of the Caribbean mixed with Peter Pan.
Playing as a pirate online in Blackwake, players can work together to sail and maintain a ship. This portion of the game feels similar to Sea of Thieves, but it quickly becomes more akin to a Call of Duty game with pirates.
Blackwake offers three PvP modes for players to enjoy in Team Deathmatch, Capture The Booty, and Fortress Siege, with lobbies supporting 54 players for sufficiently large-scale showdowns. Although the release of Sea of Thieves not long after stole some of Blackwake’s thunder, players interested in PvP first and foremost can look here for a great experience.
