The Obsidian Flames expansion set for the Pokémon Trading Card Game brings the latest and greatest ex Pokémon to the forefront of battle. Obsidian Flames, out now, contains 197 cards of varying rarity levels, including type-shifted Terastallized Pokémon and Pokémon-ex variants. Many Pokémon-ex cards also have unique special illustrations, and all of them are holographic. That count excludes Secret Rares, which bring the total up to a further 230 cards.
Pokémon-ex all come with a special rule: when they’re Knocked Out, the opponent collects two Prize cards from their stash of six. Collecting all six is a unique win condition, so Pokémon-ex cards should always be played carefully – send them out recklessly, and the opponent could easily wipe the field clean for a quick victory. Thankfully, most of these cards are especially powerful to mitigate that risk. That means the most powerful Pokémon-exare also some of the most expensive cards in the Pokémon TCG’s Obsidian Flamesset.
The #159 Dragonite ex card prominently features an image of a Terastallized Dragonite, with its claws popping out of the frame. It’s a Double Rare card featured in the Obsidian Flames Pokémon TCG expansion. As a Tera Pokémon, it has an ability that prevents it from taking damage when it’s Benched. Its type-shifted moves are both attacks: the low-cost, low-impact Wing Attack, and the high-risk, high-reward Mighty Meteor. Mighty Meteor can either do 140 or 280 damage, depending on a coin flip – but if it backfires, it can also cause Dragonite to miss a turn. According to TCGPlayer, the #159 Dragonite ex card currently costs $1.59 USD.
Similar to the #159 Dragonite ex card, the most noticeable thing about #082 Clefable is its pop-out art. Clefable ex is an excellent strategic Pokémon - its Wonderous Moon attack does 170 damage and also lets the player rearrange Psychic Energy card distribution among their other Pokémon. This can be useful mid-game when an opponent throws a wrench in the works and there’s a pressing need to readjust. Clefable ex also has the Lunar Zone ability, which lets it remove retreat costs for any Pokémon with Psychic Energy attached. Currently, the #082 Clefable ex card from the Obsidian Flames Pokémon TCG set costs $1.19 per TCGPlayer.
Of the two Glimmora ex variants introduced in the Obsidian Flames expansion for the Pokémon TCG, #213 is the clear winner. It’s an Ultra Rare card, which easily trumps its sibling’s Double Rare. It also features unique art of a Glimmora floating lazily along a foliage backdrop, which sets it apart from the other Glimmora ex’s more standard illustration. Glimmora has the Dust Field ability, which can force an opponent to discard down to three Benched Pokémon, decreasing their options in battle. The attack Poisonous Gem deals 140 damage and also poisons the opponent’s Active Pokémon. The #213 Glimmora ex card costs $1.59, according to TCGPlayer.
