It is obvious that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been, and still is, a huge success for Nintendo, but it is possible that its overwhelming popularity could now present a very large problem for the company once the Switch 2 hits the market. The racing game debuted as Mario Kart 8 on the Wii U and carried over to the Nintendo Switch with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe rather than having an entirely new game created. Now it has been almost ten years since Mario Kart 8 was initially released, yet the game hasn’t slowed down any or shown any signs of age.
The consistent release of DLC for Mario Kart 8 with new tracks and characters has done a phenomenal job of keeping the game alive. The Mario Kart sequence in the Super Mario Bros. Movie also brought the game back to many racers’ minds and reignited online discussions of the game on social media. With all the popularity that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe still has, it begs the question of where Nintendo can possibly take the series in the future that can surpass what this game has done.
By the time the final wave of announced Booster Course Pass content releases, Mario Kart 8 will feature 96 courses and nearly 50 playable characters. That isn’t even taking into consideration the staggering amount of Kart combinations players can create. The graphical quality of the game holds up well, despite being almost a decade old, due to the cartoony nature of Mario games, and doesn’t necessarily require any updates in that regard. Many of the maps are updated from previous Mario Kart games already, bringing a sense of nostalgia to the game alongside several new and unique courses.
The Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has added twelve new Cups totaling 48 new tracks along with new characters to the game. These will have released over six waves with the last wave expected to come out before the end of 2023. Even before these updates began, however, Mario Kart 8 was continually changing things with updates that made it possible to connect with Nintendo Labo Toy-Con vehicles, the Mario Kart Live Home Circuit virtual reality, and additions such as adding Zelda’s Link and the Master Cycle Zero to the game in 2018.
Consistently adding new content to Mario Kart 8 has worked to keep the game fresh and new for players, even after this many years with the same basic game. Casual players who may have stepped away from the game at different times are reminded of it and led back to playing more with each major update, driven by the desire to see what the new content is. The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass in particular caused a lot of excitement for the game, with the fresh courses feeling as if an expansion had been provided regularly.
