The Steam client’s in-game overlay has been completely redesigned and made available to the public by Valve.

The latest update for Steam includes a range of improvements for user notifications, in-game overlay, and note-taking features, as well as visual enhancements and technical updates. This major update was initially released for the Steam client beta version in April, and is now available for all users.

The update also includes visual enhancements and usability improvements for dialog boxes, menus, fonts, and colors, covering areas such as the screenshot manager and achievements. The in-game overlay, which can be accessed via Shift+Tab, has also undergone changes, including an updated design, new features, and expanded customization options.

One of the new features introduced is the note-taking function, which comes equipped with advanced text formatting, image insertion, and standalone capabilities. Users can save multiple notes for each game, which are accessible through the in-game overlay, desktop client, and Steam Deck. A new pinning feature has also been launched, allowing users to “pin” panels within the in-game overlay with adjustable transparency for in-game viewing. The updated controller configurator is integrated into the overlay when a gamepad is connected. Additionally, the Mac and Linux versions of Steam now support hardware acceleration.

While these user-oriented features are the most noticeable, the update also includes significant internal improvements. Notably, changes have been made to how code is distributed between Steam Desktop, Steam Deck, and Big Picture mode.

In addition to these features, the update also includes several general changes and fixes. For example, it addressed multiple issues with multi-monitor setups with mixed resolutions, context menus, links in the client, download speed limits, and game list navigation. It also adjusted time settings, user login interface, game preloading and verification process, and resolved crashes related to bandwidth limitations and switching favorite game status.
