The Resemblance Between Clive and Jon Snow in Final Fantasy 16 is Striking

Final Fantasy 16s Clive is, essentially, Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, HBO’s hit TV show inspired by George R.R. Martin’s novel series, A Song of Ice and Fire. Clive Rosfield is the protagonist of the new action RPG developed by Square Enix and the main controllable character in the game. He is the son of the archduke of the Grand Duchy of Rosaria and brother to Joshua. He is also raised as the Dominant of the Eikon Phoenix, but later on discovers that his flaming powers hail from the dark Eikon in Final Fantasy 16, Ifrit, rather than Phoenix. His story is told in parts with several time skips.

As was reported by Eurogamer in May 2023, Final Fantasy 16 has influences in Western fantasy, which include The Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones. The game director, Naoki Yoshida, revealed that watching HBO’s TV show was a requirement for every member of the development team. While the team was simply aiming for a more mature tone and a story filled with political intrigue and adult relationships, it does seem like a bit more of the show’s inspiration was added into the game, as Final Fantasy 16’s Clive is very similar to Game of Thrones’ Jon Snow.

There are many similarities between Final Fantasy 16’s Clive and Jon Snow, and they are not simply related to his stoic demeanor. One of the first notable aspects is how much the character is adored by his father and disliked by his mother figure. In Final Fantasy 16, Clive is beloved by the Archduke, but his mother actively despises him, preferring his younger brother, Joshua. In Game of Thrones, Catelyn Stark’s disdain for Jon Snow stems from the fact that he is Ned Stark’s bastard child. Although Clive is not a bastard and the reason for which he is hated is not the same, this relationship dynamic is nearly identical.
