“Star Wars” star Liam Neeson couldn’t stop making the sound of a lightsaber during the shooting of Episode I.
Speaking on the program Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend, the “Star Wars” star revealed that during the filming of “Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace,” he and Ewan McGregor constantly made these iconic lightsaber sounds.
When we first had to use a lightsaber for a small fight… We both automatically made these sounds. George said, “Stop doing that. Guys, we can add that later.”
Clearly, he is not the only actor who faced this problem.
McGregor, as we know, couldn’t stop making these sounds during the filming of the “Star Wars” prequels, and in a previous interview with Graham Norton, he revealed that he had a similar problem.
“At first, it was quite difficult not to make that sound,” he confessed, imitating the buzzing of a lightsaber. “And when it turns off, it makes an even more pleasant sound.”
Even Hayden Christensen, who played Anakin Skywalker, admitted during a discussion at Star Wars Celebration that he couldn’t resist making lightsaber sounds.
“Hayden, it looks really cool,” he recalled George Lucas telling him. “But I see your mouth moving. You shouldn’t be doing that. We’ll add the sound effects later.” I was so focused that I didn’t even realize I was doing it.
