The Thousand Tomes level up slowly in Final Fantasy 16, leaving players wondering if there’s really a worthy reward at the end of it. As per Final Fantasy tradition, FF16 has a truly dense system of lore. However, FF16’s world building isn’t complicated just for the sake of being complicated. Every detail is included for a reason, and it all adds up to a sensible whole. Cities have economic standings defined by their visible exports, people have occupations that require them to be in certain places, and item drops have real connections to their sources. It’s all supported by an expansive network of readable signs and documents, and approachable NPCs.
Still, it’s not like FF16’s lore is totally inscrutable. All the details of its world are compiled in a number of accessible, comprehensive lore features, including the Thousand Tomes. The Thousand Tomes functions as the game’s lore compendium, with countless entries devoted to its most prominent people, places, and things. Uniquely among FF16’s lore-supporting features, though, the Thousand Tomes has its own leveling system separate from Clive’s level. Checking in with Harpocrates, who runs the Tomes, repeatedly will lead to gradual increases in the player’s Thousand Tomes level. However, the game never makes it totally clear just what the ever-increasing number actually affects.
Despite the player’s best efforts, the reward for maxing out the Thousand Tomes level in FF16 is absolutely nothing. Really the only thing players stand to gain from maxing out their Thousand Tomes level is the satisfaction of getting to hear the little jingle of the classic Final Fantasy fanfare while watching Clive and Harpocrates’ sprites throw their arms into the air. Completing the Thousand Tomes doesn’t reward any kind of item, equipment, or Wall of Memories memento in FF16. Completion is its own reward; the feature exists almost entirely for its own purpose, and the utility it provides to the player.
Strangely, the maximum possible level for the Thousand Tomes in FF16 is eight. Players might expect it to be a more even number, like a multiple of five or 10, but for whatever reason, it’s eight. It’s likely that eight levels of Thousand Tomes completion just best reflected the number of entries that players have to fill in – there are too many that if the max level was lower, the player would level up too quickly, and if it was higher, the player would be bored by their slow progress and forget to check in with Harpocrates. However, while there’s no reward for reaching level 8 of the Thousand Tomes, there’s a little incentive for hitting a lesser milestone.
Although reaching max level of the Thousand Tomes in FF16 nets the player little more than bragging rights, reaching level five is enough to get the trophy “The More You Know.” It’s only a bronze trophy, which may be surprising considering it takes a significant amount of time to complete. But since the Thousand Tomes progress naturally as the player goes through the…
