The M-Rated Final Fantasy 16 Demo Undoubtedly Deserves Its Rating

The Final Fantasy 16 demo has definitely earned its M-Rating. The new playable demo of the highly anticipated action RPG has been made available for PS5 consoles following developer Square Enix’s showcase during Summer Game Fest, and allows players to test out the title ahead of its release later this month. The demonstration covers the first two hours of gameplay, showcasing both its narrative aspects and introducing players to the gameplay system chosen for this installation in the franchise.

Final Fantasy 16 is one of the most awaited games of the year, as it is the first mainline title in the series since Final Fantasy 15, which was extremely divisive. The new game follows the story of Clive Rosfield, a member of Rosaria’s royalty and the Dominant of the Eikon Ifrit. Clive’s story will be told in parts, both in the present and in the past, and will show how he evolves with each event he goes through. Luckily, players can already try out the Final Fantasy 16 demo and see a portion of that story themselves – but they should be aware that it has an M-Rating.

Final Fantasy 16 has many elements which earned it a rating of Mature from the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board). The title contains sexual content, strong language, and a decent amount of violence and blood, all of which are reflected by the Final Fantasy 16 demo – and that is what grants it the M-Rating. During the first few hours covered by the demo, there is a constant usage of strong language, and within the first few minutes, cutscenes include suggestive themes. The Final Fantasy 16 demo also covers a war, which shows explicit violence and a lot of blood.

The M-Rating for the Final Fantasy 16 demo and the game itself is the result of the creative decisions made for the title. FF16 is a return to high fantasy, but also one inspired by HBO’s hit TV show, Game of Thrones. Earlier this year, game director Naoki Yoshida, also known as Yoshi-P, revealed to Eurogamer that the entire development team was required to watch the show based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Fire and Ice. As such, the game has fully embraced a more adult theme, which includes sex, intense violence, and blood.

Of course, these elements which grant the Final Fantasy 16 demo the M-Rating are not the only aspects from Game of Thrones to be incorporated. There is heavy attention to political intrigue told in the campaign, along with emotional storytelling and deep character construction which help foster the adult themes within the classic franchise. Violence and suggestive themes have always been present in Final Fantasy games, but it does seem like Final Fantasy 16 is taking those to a new level for the series.
