The Depths of Zelda: TOTK Conceal a Touching Tale of Tragedy and Warmth

In not only The Legend of Zelda: Tears of ⁣the Kingdom, but the Zelda⁢ franchise‌ as a whole, there have been plenty of tragic⁣ stories‌ for players to learn about and experience. While most of them are told to the player directly through either history discussions of Hyrule‌ or ⁢memories, Tears of the Kingdom⁢ leaves one bitter-sweet secret for Link to stumble upon on ⁢his own. It involves a seemingly intentional‌ pair of Poes that can be found in a very specific location in the Depths of‍ Hyrule.

As players may know, many⁤ elements of both the Sky ‌and the Depths mimic areas on the‍ Surface of Hyrule where they overlap. One of these areas, in particular, is Lover’s‌ Pond, which players may⁤ remember from Breath⁤ of the Wild as it ‌is where Link is able ‌to help unite Wabbin and Perda, who are ⁢still⁢ together with‌ a child in Tears of⁢ the Kingdom. Lover’s Pond is a heart-shaped pond that is described ⁤as being⁣ the place where⁤ someone ⁤may travel and meet ⁢their soulmate, ‌a point that is exemplified by the couple that ⁣Link helps.

While exploring the Depths of Hyrule, Link is bound ⁣to come across Poes in⁤ Zelda: Tears ⁤of the‍ Kingdom. In⁣ previous Zelda games, there have been other versions ‍of⁢ Poes that primarily showcase them ‌as ‌enemies. They are typically depicted as spirits⁣ turned into monsters due to an unfinished attachment to the mortal⁢ world and thus haunt the surface of ‍Hyrule. In Tears⁣ of the Kingdom, they make another appearance, but one that is dramatically different from those before. They are ‍only ‌found in⁣ the Depths and are collected to⁤ be⁢ used as one of the ⁤many forms of currency in TOTK.

Though⁤ they still represent the same‍ general idea as Poes ‌in‌ other Zelda games, it is taken just a ‍little bit further, and rather than being turned into enemies for Link to face, they are just floating wisps scattered‍ around the Depths. Though they have not been corrupted, they are still portrayed⁣ as the spirits‌ of the dead that were unable to reach the afterlife ‍and thus remain stranded⁣ in the Depths, until TOTK’s Bargainer Statues take them from Link and ⁣send them on their way. Though ⁣this⁣ is a⁢ sad concept in⁤ general for⁤ all the Poes that Link collects, none of them‌ have any form⁤ of personal attachment, so it’s easy to forget⁢ what they truly represent until ⁣presented with a ⁤very ⁤obvious depiction meant to remind ‍Link.

One example‍ of Poes that is likely to provoke more of a reaction from ‌players‌ is a⁤ pair found in the Depths’ version of Lover’s Pond. Those⁣ who⁣ have visited Lover’s Pond ⁣on the surface of Hyrule in Tears‌ of the Kingdom know that it ‌is a beautiful and peaceful area⁢ with lots of greenery and a⁢ glistening pond for bachelors and bachelorettes to meet their soulmates. It’s⁢ a joyous little spot ⁢featured in Hyrule that entirely emulates the idea of hope for‌ the future, something that feels⁣ like ‍a ⁤breath ⁤of fresh air among the chaos and turbulent times of the‌ game.
