The Best Harry Potter Villain Has Been Cast in Baldur’s Gate 3

Baldur’s Gate 3 has released a new teaser trailer, and Harry Potter fans will be delighted to see a very familiar face. Released as part of Summer Game Fest 2023’s opening night showcase, Larian Studios provided players with a peek behind the scenes as development on Baldur’s Gate 3 nears its end. This preview included a well-known actor set to play a pivotal role in Baldur’s Gate 3’s sure-to-be epic storyline.

Baldur’s Gate 3 has been in early access since 2020, with developer Larian adding more content, such as player classes, steadily. Set in the Forgotten Realms world of Dungeon & Dragons, Baldur’s Gate 3 takes place roughly 100 years after the events of Baldur’s Gate 2. With well-known DnD characters such as Minsc returning for Baldur’s Gate 3, players have high hopes for when the game’s finished form is released.

Jason Isaacs, best known to Harry Potter fans for the charismatic villain Lucius Malfoy, will be joining Baldur’s Gate 3 as the primary antagonist Lord Enver Gortash. Issacs himself doesn’t see Gortash as a villain, however, more as a man who is a product of his environment. In a tweet from Larian Studios, Isaacs said, “In a brutal world of betrayals and butchery, he’s learned to lie better and backstab first.”

In the teaser, Gortash is shown being sworn in as protector of Baldur’s Gate after Duke Ravengard’s disappearance. Fans of Dungeons & Dragons will already know of Ravengard’s fate if they have played the campaign Baldur’s Gate: Descent into Avernus. Gortash seeks to lead Baldur’s Gate to glory, but in his way, and seems unlikely to accept any challenge to his rule. It is already clear from the short trailer that he is a man who sees himself as the master of his domain and is confident in his own victory.

Isaacs is no stranger to villainous roles and is perhaps an actor best known for his roles as bad guys in various movies, television series, and games. Isaacs has already delighted many video game players with his roles in the Hitmain franchise, as well as most recently in The Last Worker and Marvel’s Midnight Suns. Isaacs was also the man behind the voice of such nefarious characters as Admiral Zhao in Avatar: The Last Airbender, a role he reprised for the 2006 game of the same name. He was outstanding as the Grand Inquisitor in the first season of Star Wars Rebels and the dastardly Captain Lorca in Star Trek: Discovery.
