The company CD Projekt Red has confirmed that despite the success of Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty, paid expansion and update 2.0 will be the last major updates to the game as the studio shifts its focus to the sequel.
Of course, we have known this for a while, but it is fair to wonder if the plan has changed after Phantom Liberty was so well received and the redemption arc led to the highest player count since 2020. However, in an interview with PC Gamer, game director Gabe Amatangelo confirmed that this is indeed the end of Cyberpunk 2077, apart from minor updates.
2.0 and Phantom Liberty are the last major updates. We will do a little more, but these are the last major updates.
When asked what comes next, he replied: “Next is Cyberpunk 2. Or Orion, as we would call it, whatever we name it.”
CDPR first announced the sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, codenamed Orion, in October 2022, stating that it “will showcase the full power and potential of the Cyberpunk universe” and “expand the Cyberpunk franchise further and continue to utilize the potential of this dark future universe.” Besides that, we have heard practically nothing about it thus far.
Considering that The Witcher 4 is in development, a new IP separate from Cyberpunk and Witcher, as well as a new Witcher game by external developers, it is safe to say that CDPR has a lot on its plate. It is unknown how long a full-fledged sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 will take, but for example, the first game took about 10 years. In short, do not expect Project Orion to resemble something playable for a long time.
