Amazon has begun informing Prime Video subscribers that they will need to pay an additional fee if they wish to avoid interruptions from commercials. In an email sent to customers, the company stated that starting on January 29, it will begin displaying “limited advertisements” during its service’s movies and shows. Those who prefer an ad-free experience will be required to pay an extra $3 per month on top of their Prime subscription or their standalone $9-per-month Prime Video membership.
The company initially announced its intention to include ads with its content in September, with the US, UK, Germany, and Canada being the first regions affected. Customers in France, Italy, Spain, Mexico, and Australia will need to decide whether to tolerate the ads or pay an additional fee by late next year.
