Starfield Surprises Players by Including a Historical Figure as a Companion

There are a wide variety of companions to recruit in Starfield, but one of them seems to have walked right out of a history book. Each companion in Starfield is different:⁤ some of them are friends ⁢and allies who devote their lives ⁢to the player character, some of them are mere mercenaries who‌ can⁣ be hired for a fee, and some of them land somewhere in ⁤between. They all have their likes and dislikes, and a few of them can ‍even been romanced. They can follow the player character directly, work on their ship, or be assigned to an Outpost in Starfield.

Starfield also ⁢contains numerous historical and literary references that contribute to the worldbuilding of its ‌futuristic setting. There are planets named after historical astronauts and scientists, like Yuri Gagarin,⁣ Mae Jemison, and Isaac Newton. Players can visit NASA’s Curiosity Rover at The Lodge, headquarters of the ⁢Constellation⁣ faction,⁢ or find a number ⁤of Charles Dickens novels scattered throughout the ⁤world of Starfield. One quest line, however, and ⁣the companion that goes along with⁤ it, takes historical references to a whole new level.

Players can recruit historic aviator Amelia Earhart on⁤ their journeys through the galaxy in Starfield. Born in 1897, in Atchison, Kansas, Earhart ⁣became the first woman to fly solo across the ⁢Atlantic Ocean in 1937. She helped found the 99s International Organization of Women Pilots, encouraging more women to pursue careers in aviation. She was renowned, in her time as in this one, ‌for her bravery and adventurous spirit. Unfortunately, she disappeared in 1937 while ‌attempting to ‌set another world record – becoming the first woman to circumnavigate the globe in an airplane – and was presumed dead two years later.

While many theories have proliferated in the years since Amelia Earhart’s disappearance, Starfield finally has the answers. In actuality, the Amelia Earhart⁤ that appears in Starfield is a clone of the original,⁢ one of many historical figures who have been revived by a ⁣mysterious project⁣ called Operation Starseed. Players can meet and interact with many of them as part of a side quest in Starfield, and after completing it, can take⁢ Amelia Earhart with them on ⁢their adventures. She ⁤may not be the most useful companion, with two points in Piloting and Rifle Certification, but she’s certainly a fun one.

In order to‌ recruit Amelia Earhart, players will have to complete the quest “Operation Starseed.” This quest begins with a mysterious transmission that players can⁤ randomly receive while traveling through space, directing them to offer assistance in the ⁤troubled colony of Crucible. They’ll have to fly⁣ to Charybdis III, in a‌ level 65 system that requires a serious grav‍ drive and ‌a skilled pilot to reach. Landing near Crucible starts a conversation with Tobias, ‌a robot, ‌who’s interrupted by a character named Ada. Ada explains⁤ that everyone else in the settlement is cowering indoors, and directs ⁤the player character to ⁤the home of its leader, Franklin.
